It was a busy weekend in hockey.  With fewer games remaining in the season it is really heating up in the standings.  Here is what happened Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the NHL.

Friday March 9th:
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Florida Panthers in a S/O.  James Neal and Evgeni Malkin scored the S/O winners.
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3.  Henrik Zetterberg scored 2 goals and collected an assist for the Wings.
The Chicago Blackhawks beat the New York Rangers 4-3.  New York was winning 2-1 early in the 3rd but Chicago scored 3 goals in 6:05 minutes to make it 4-2.  New York scored one more with 41 seconds to go in the 3rd but that wasn't enough.
In the battle of the former Atlanta franchises the Calgary Flames (formerly the Atlanta Flames) beat the Winnipeg Jets (formerly the Atlanta Thrashers) 5-3.  Calgary took an early 3-0 lead but Winnipeg scored 2 before the 1st period ended.  Calgary potted 2 more and Winnipeg one for the 5-3 final.

Saturday March 10th:
The Washington Capitals beat the Boston Bruins 4-3.  Boston tied the game briefly 2-2 in the 2nd period but Washington took a 4-2 lead by the end of the 2nd period.  Boston's Johnny Boychuk potted one more but it wasn't enough.
The Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in a S/O.  Milan Hejduk and Peter Mueller scored the S/O goals for Colorado.
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 in a S/O.  Claude Giroux scored the only goal of the entire night!
The Buffalo Sabres beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3 in a S/O.  It was back and forth scoring with the teams rotating goals for a 3-3 tie before Jason Pominville and Tyler Ennis scored the S/O winners.
The New Jersey Devils beat the New York Islanders 2-1.  All 3 goals were scored in the 3rd period with the Islanders opening up the scoring at 6:46 but New Jersey scored 2 late goals.  One at 18:21, the other at 18:35.  Only 14 seconds apart, with the 2nd goal being scored with 1:25 remaining in the 3rd period.  Check out the Islander goals below!
The Carolina Hurricane beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2.  It was a 2-2 tie to end the 1st, no scoring in the 2nd and Carolina scored 2 goals in the 3rd.
The St. Louis Blues beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1.  This loss for the Blue Jackets snapped a 4 game win streak.
The Nashville Predators beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2.  Andrei Kostitsyn scored the 2nd and 3rd goals for Nashville and both goals were assisted by his brother Sergei Kostitsyn and David Legwand.
The Dallas Stars shut the door on the Anaheim Ducks.  Brendan Morrow scored the 1st Dallas goal and Michael Ryder scored the 2nd into an empty net in the last minute of the 3rd period.
The Phoenix Coyotes shut the door on the San Jose Sharks 3-0.  Mikkel Boedker and Michael Stone scored in the 2nd for Phoenix.  Former Canuck Raffi Torres scored the 3rd goal early in the 3rd assisted by Shane Doan and Keith Yandle.
In the final game to end Saturday night the Montreal Canadians beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1.  The American Express Line's Ryan Kesler scored the 1st goal of the night assisted by David Booth and Chris Higgins.  Montreal's Blake Geoffrion tied it up.  Then in the 3rd period Erik Cole scored twice for Montreal and P.K. Subban scored once. Back to Blake Geoffrion and his historic goal. Blake Geoffrion is the 4th generation of his family to put on a Canadians jersey. His father played 32 games for les Canadiens and his grandfather is the legendary Boom Boom Geoffrion. This family link started way back with the beyond legendary Howie Morenz, who was Blake's great grandfather. Quite a lineage.  Blake's father never did score a goal in a Canadians jersey so Blake can forever hold that one over his dad's head!

Sunday March 11th:
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 5-2.  That makes it 9 straight wins for the PENS.  Penguin Captain Sidney Crosby did not return to the lineup but let's wait and see if he joins his team in action later this week.
The Washington Capitals shut out the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-0.  Both teams took 23 shots on net but washington goalie Michal Neuvirth made 23 saves vs Jonas Gustavsson's 21 saves for Toronto.
In another 2-0 final the Florida Panthers beat the Carolina Hurricane.  Florida goalie Jose Theodore made 34 saves and Cam Ward stopped 31 shots.
The St. Louis Blues are on a 5 game win streak after beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.  After this loss the Blue Jackets are the first team this year officially out of the running for the Stanley Cup.  With only 51 points in 69 games and 13 remaining, even if the Blue Jackets won every game for 26 more points that would only give them 77 points total.   There is a 3 way tie right now for 8th place and all 3 teams have 76 points.  Whichever team wins next for 78 points would make it impossible for Columbus to get a spot.
The Calgary Flames beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3.  This means a 3 game win streak for the Flames and the 8th spot for now in the west.
The New Jersey Devils beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1.  Devil Patrik Elias scored the only goal in the 1st period and it was a scoreless 2nd.  Claude Giroux scored to tie it up just 16 seconds into the 3rd but then New Jersey scored 3 goals in 12 minutes and 26 seconds.  That makes it 4 wins in a row for New Jersey!
The New York Rangers beat the New York Islanders 4-3.  The teams rotated goals the entire game for a 3-3 tie to end the 3rd period.  Then with only 6 seconds left in OT Ranger Marian Gaborik scored the winner!  Check out the winning goal below!
In the final game to end last night the Los Angeles Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in a S/O.  It went to the 6th round of the shootout and the only goal scored between 12 shooters was by Mike Richards!

Tonight's lineup is much shorter:
The Montreal Canadians take on the Buffalo Sabres at 4:00 pm
The Anaheim Ducks take on the Colorado Avalanche at 6:30 pm
The San Jose Sharks take on the Edmonton Oilers at 6:30 pm
and the Nashville Predators take on the Phoenix Coyotes at 7:00 pm

Check back tomorrow for a full breakdown of the standings!  Enjoy X
