Yesterday started with a game between the 2011 Stanley Cup Champs the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals. This game began to play out like the last one. In game one the only goal scored was by Chris Kelly 1:18 in OT. The 1st period was scoreless. Late in the 2nd period Tim Thomas's shutout streak of 161 minutes and 41 seconds was erased when Troy Brouwer scored. It was assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Kari Alzner. Thomas's streak dated back to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last year. In the 3rd period Benoit Pouliot of the Boston Bruins scored his 1st playoff goal ever. Into OT. It was a scoreless 1st OT and into the 2nd sudden death OT and Nicklas Backstrom assisted by Marcus Johansson scored for Washington 2-1 final and the series is tied 1-1. The player to steal the show in this game would be Washington goalie Braden Holtby. Holtby stopped 43 of 44 shots. He played 7 games in the regular season for Washington and 14 in the year prior. Now he is the starting goaltender in the 1st round of the playoffs for a team that fought tooth and nail to get in? How did that happen? Both Tomas Vokoun and Michael Neuvirth are out and NHL rules state you must dress 2 goaltenders for every game. Enter Braden Holtby the AHL goalie that was playing for the Hershey Bears in Pennsulivna. Holtby is proving he can keep up stopping 72 of 74 shots in the series so far. Below a quick clip of Holtby doing what he does best, making a save!
In St. Louis Jaroslav Halak and Brain Elliott combined for a 3-0 shutout. The series is tied 1-1. San Jose won game 1 in double OT. St. Louis took an early lead with a goal by Vladimir Sobotka. In the 2nd period David Backes scored to make in 2-0 and with 25 seconds left in the 3rd period Andy Mcdonald scored 3-0 St. Louis win! Jaroslav Halak made 12 saves before his teammate Barret Jackman hit him awkwardly and Brian Elliott stepped into net and stopped the next 17 shots. There were 132 penalty minutes handed out in this very physical game, 106 in the 3rd period alone. Total: San Jose took 64 minutes in penalties and 51 of those were on the 3rd period.
