The Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 last night in Edmonton.  Cory Schneider was between the pipes.  Henrik Sedin scored the first goal for Vancouver 53 seconds into the 1st period.  Sami Salo grabbed his 300th career point 6 minutes later to make the score 2-0 at the end of the 1st.  Oiler Captain Shawn Horcoff made it 2-1 early in the 2nd period.  Kevin Bieksa scored the eventual game winner.  Chris Higgins scored the 4th Vancouver goal, his first goal in 16 games.  Before the 2nd period ended Magnus Paajarvi made it 4-2 Edmonton.  In the 3rd period Daniel Sedin was assisted by Alex Burrows scored the 5th goal.  After this win Vancouver is 2nd overall in the league with 82 points.  Only 2 points behind the league leader, the Detroit Red Wings.  The Canucks are also the first team this season to win 20 away games.  Vancouver has also picked up points in their last 13 games.

The Buffalo Sabers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 yesterday.  Derek Roy scored twice for the Sabers but former Canuck and Buffalo D-Man #10 Christian Ehrhoff picked up 3 assists.  Both Pittsburgh goalies Marc-Andre Fleury and Brent Johnson allowed 3 goals and saved 9 shots each.  Ryan Miller made 24 saves.

Speaking of Ryan Miller his brother Drew Miller helped the Detroit Red Wings get their 23rd at home win.  Every time Detroit wins at home they set a new record.  In their last 23 games at home, 21 of them the Red Wings have let in 2 or fewer goals.  The Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 yesterday.  Drew Miller scored one goal and assisted on Darren Helm's goal.  Henrik Zetterberg scored the other goal for Detroit.  Detroit is 1st overall in the league with 84 points.  WOW!

The Chicago Blackhawks are on a 3 game win streak.  They beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1.
The New Jersey Devils also beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-1.
The Anaheim Ducks shut out the Florida Panthers 2-0.  Finnish Flash and extremely handsome man Teemu Selanne scored the 1st goal for Anaheim and Niklas Hagman, assisted by Team Canada 2010 players Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf scored the 2nd goal.  Even though Anaheim is 13th in the western standings they are only 5 points out of a playoff spot.  Anaheim has 60 points and Calgary in 8th spot has 65.
The Nashville Predators beat the Dallas Stars 3-2.  Good looking Shea Weber scored for Nashville and Nashville's goalie Pekka Rinne picked up an assist on the 3rd goal.  Dallas super star Jamie Benn did not play.  Benn is healing from an accidental cut to the leg he suffered from a skate Thursday night against the Calgary Flames.
The worst team in the west the Columbus Blue Jackets gave the best team in the east the New York Rangers a run for their money yesterday.  It ended 3-2 Rangers in OT.  Columbus super star Rick Nash scored the tying goal with 93 seconds to go in the 3rd period.  Ranger Derek Stepan ended OT after 22 seconds.  The Rangers have 81 points and top spot in the east while Columbus has 41 points and 15th place (dead last) in the west.

The Winnipeg Jets are on a 3 game win streak.  Yesterday they beat Colorado Avalanche 5-1.  Evander Kane and Kyle Wellwood both got a goal and an assist.  Bryan Little scored 2 goals and Dustin Byfuglien picked up 2 assists.  Team Captain Andrew Ladd scored a goal but the man with the most points?  The man to your left, Blake Wheeler assisted 4 goals!  Wow!  The 4 assists were # 32, 33, 34 and 35 this season for Wheeler.  After this win Winnipeg is 9th in the west with 64 points.  They are tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs who also have 64 points and are in 8th place.  Both teams have 29 wins and 6 OT loses but Toronto has played 2 less games and so gets the 8th spot.  Go Winnipeg Go!

The busiest man in hockey yesterday was possibly this man, goalie Niklas Backstrom.  Backstrom stopped a whopping 48 shots yesterday to help his team the Minnesota Wild beat the Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins 2-0!  There was no scoring in the 1st period.  Minnesota scored twice in the 2nd by Chad Rau and Matt Cullen.  Nothing in the 3rd and that was that.  It was Backstrom's 4th shutout this year.  Tim Thomas stopped 27 of 29 shots.  Boston is still leading their division with 72 points and 2nd overall in the east while Minnesota is 12th in the west with 61 points.  Four points out of a playoff spot.

There are only 2 games being played today in the NHL:
Ottawa Senators vs the New York Islanders at 10:00am
Washington Capitals vs the Carolina Hurricane at 4:30pm

Real quickly I want to explain how the points system works.  I know I am always referring to the points and standings in the league.  With every game that is played a team can pick up a maximum of 2 points.  Every team plays 82 games a season so it is possible to get 164 points but a team would have to win every single game all season.  Every NHL game is 60 minutes.  If a team wins the game in that 60 minutes they get 2 points and the losing team gets 0 points.  If the game is tied after 60 minutes it goes into overtime.  If a team scores in OT they get 2 points and the losing team gets 1 point.  If their is no scoring in the OT then it goes to a shootout.  The shootout will go as long as it needs to to decide the winner.  The winner will get 2 points the loser 1 point.  Then during the season teams collect points and the top 8 teams move onto the playoffs.  I will explain in more detail how teams get into the playoffs in a future episode of "Hockey Talk with Courtney"
