The Canucks played their 2nd game of a 4 game road trip last night in Sunrise, Florida.  After a game like the one the Canucks played against Boston, this one had a little less pazzaz.  Vancouver went into this game 4-0-1 in the last 5 years against Florida.  Lou, who was traded from Florida had never lost in the building since being traded to Vancouver.  Dale Weise opened up scoring for the Canucks early in the 1st with a 2 man breakaway assisted by Manny Malhorta.  It was a beauty and Weise's 3rd goal of the season.  It was silent for the rest of the 1st.  Into the 2nd period 5 minutes in Florida's Dmitry Kulikov ties it up for Florida.  Six minutes later Florida took the lead when Marcel Goc netted one past Lou on a Florida power play.

Florida had Scott Clemmensen as the starteing goaltender with Brian Foster as the backup.  #1 Florida starter Jose Theodore is out with injury.  It was the 1st time Florida has beat Vancouver in regulation in 12 years! Vancouver now sits 1st place in the western conference and Florida sits 3rd in the eastern conference.  Both are leading their respective divisions.  Vancouver in the northwest, Florida in the southeast. Vancouver has a good handfull of former Panthers which makes this game fun to watch.  Keith Ballard, David Booth, Chris Higgins and Roberto Luongo all were traded from Florida over the years and it was fun to see former Canuck Mikael Samuelsson play his old club for the only time this season. Watch Vancouver play Tampa Bay tonight, game time 4:30pm.  GO CANUCKS GO!

The only other game in the NHL last night was the Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals.  Both of these teams have replaced head coaches this year and their all stars don't show up every night.  Both teams have been struggling.  This would be the only meeting between these 2 teams this year.  Washington opened up the scoring early in the 1st with a goal by Marcus Johansson.  From then on it was all Los Angeles, with them scoring 5 consecutive goals between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd periods.  Kyle Clifford, Anze Kopitar, Jack Johnson, Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams all scored for the Kings.  Marcus Johansson scored the 2nd and final goal for the Capitals.  Final score 5-2.  Los Angeles now sits 6th in the west and Washington is 10th in the east.  Halfway through the season and both teams are going to be trying to secure a playoff spot.

Brad Marchand was suspended by the NHL for 5 games because of his hit on Sami Salo in Vancouver's game against Boston Saturday morning.  It was a low hit to Sami's knees and that is not allowed in hockey.  It is dangerous.  Marchand received a 5 minute major and he was out for the rest of the game.  Vancouver did end up scoring twice on the power play, Cody Hogdson scoring the 4th goal and the game winner. What did make the hit by Marchand a bit dirtier is that 16 seconds before Marchand and Salo checked each other cleanly.  Then Marchand took the cheap shot that knocked Salo out cold after landing on the back of his head and neck. Salo is out for a week with a concussion and Marchand will likely be a target in future games.  Nobody in hockey likes a weasel and Marchand has been red flagged.  Watch the Marchand hit in "If You Need a Visual"

On a fun note Saturday night in hockey land Shane Doan Captain of the Phoenix Coyotes scored his 1st career hat trick!  Doan has played 16 seasons in the NHL and over 1,100 games.  He played for the original Jets in Winnipeg and moved with the team when they were relocated to Phoenix. A leader in the locker room and community Doan is a player you can respect.  What makes this game even more interesting is that Doan had had 39 two goal games already in his career with never being  quite able to net the 3rd goal.  His 3rd goal in this game came with 0.01 left on the clock in the 3rd period.  Party time in Phoenix!  Way to go Doan!  A 16 year hat trick drought is over!  Check out Shane Doan's hat trick in "If You Need a Visual."
