New Jersey Devils Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise
There were only 8 games played in the NHL last night, here is a quick breakdown:

The New Jersey Devils beat the Colorado Avalanche 1-0.  It was a scoreless 1st, 2nd and 3rd period.  After a pointless OT it was onto the shootout.  It only took 2 shooters from each team before it ended.  Both #17 Kovalchuk and #9 Parise scored for the Devils.  Both Milan Hejduk and Peter Mueller missed for Colorado.  It is funny to think Colorado still gets a point for never scoring a goal last night!  After this win New Jersey is still 6th in the east with 87 points, while Colorado has broken the 4 way tie in the west and is in 8th place with 81 points.

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders 3-2.  Philly had a 3-0 lead for over 53 minutes then the Islanders scored 2 goals in 35 seconds.  Former Canuck Michael Grabner scored the 1st goal for the Islanders and hotshot John Tavares scored the 2nd.  Philly holds the 5th spot in the east with 89 points and the Islanders are 15th in the east with 67 points.

Crosby taking in the action against the Rangers
Sidney Crosby got to do something he hadn't done since December 5th 2011, sit on the bench and play with his team during a game!  It was a 5-2 final with Matt Cooke scoring twice, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis scoring the other 3 goals.  Crosby played 16:00 minutes last night and assisted 2 goals.  Every team in the east better watch out now.  Sid the Kid, the Next One or whatever you want to call him is back!  This matchup between the teams also meant brothers Marc Staal of the Rangers and Jordan Staal of the Penguins played against each other.  Staal Mom may be more proud of Jordan who registered a point, Marc only registered a penalty last night.  Pittsburgh is on a wild 10 game winning streak now sitting only 4 points behind Division leader the New York Rangers with 91 points.  The Rangers are top in the east with 95 points.

The #1 team in the west the St. Louis Blues had the door shut on them 2-0 by the Carolina Hurricane.  It was a scoreless 1st and 2nd period then Carolina scored 2 goals in the 3rd.  Carolina's Captain is 3rd Staal brother Eric.  St. Louis still have 98 points and 6 more then 2nd place Vancouver.  Carolina is 13th in the east with 69 points.
The Toronto Maple Leafs snapped a 5 game losing streak by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1.  Toronto was only 26 seconds away from a shutout when Lightning Martin St. Louis scored his 23rd goal of the year.  Both teams are still out of playoffs spots right now.  Tampa Bay is 11th with 71 points, Toronto 12th with 70 points.
The Boston Bruins lost to the Florida Panthers 6-2.  Six different Panthers scored goals including the opening goal by former Canucks Mikael Samuelsson.  Florida is 3rd in the east with 81 points and Boston is still 2nd with 83 points but Boston is on a 4 game losing streak and Florida is on a 3 game winning streak.

The Calgary Flames beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-1.  Four different Flames scored including Captain Jarome Iginla.  These are 2 teams fighting for the 8th place in the west. Calgary is 10th with 80 points while Phoenix is 7th with 81 points.  It is a fight every night one of these teams steps on the ice.

The San Jose Sharks beat the Nashville Predators 2-1 in a S/O.  Nashville had the lead after Patric Hornqvist scored 13:18 into the 1st period but San Jose Captain Joe Thornton scored 55 seconds into the 3rd period.  The only goal in the S/O was scored by Ryane Clowe.  San Jose has been pumped out of a playoff spot into 9th with 80 points and Nashville is 5th with 90 points.
