Four games total were played this weekend.  Three games ones and one game two.  The Washington Capitals took on the New York Rangers and the St. Louis Blues took on the Los Angeles Kings.  Of the 4 teams that played today the New York Rangers are the only team to have won a Stanley Cup. The Rangers being an Original 6 team have had a few extra years to win the cup and have won a total of 4 times.  The other 3 teams, the Capitals, Blues and Kings have all been to the final in previous years but never won a cup.  Keep in mind after this round there is still the 3rd round for the conference finals and whoever wins that goes and plays in the finals.  If you want to see  a full Stanley Cup countdown check out Episode 2 of Hockey Talk with Courtney.  Not only do you learn about penalties in hockey but the fun fact: A Stanley Cup countdown!

On Sunday the New Jersey Devils took on the Philadelphia Flyers and the Nashville Predators played the Phoenix Coyotes for the second time.  Here is a quick break down of all 4 games:

Perhaps a common theme forming again in the 2nd round is scoreless 1st periods.  The 1st goal of this series wasn't scored until 12:38 minutes was gone in the 2nd period.  Artem Anisimov scored for his team the Rangers, but with 4 seconds left in the period Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals to tie the game 1-1.  In the 3rd period New York took a 2 goal lead with both goals being scored 90 seconds apart.  The first by Chris Kreider, the 2nd by Brad Richards.  Braden Holtby stopped 11 of 14 shots, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 17 of 18.  Both team took 4 penatlies each and New York skates away with a win and a 1-0 lead in the series.  Check out Artem Anisimov's goal below.

And the series begins between the LAX and the STL!
The Los Angeles Kings picked up their 5th win in 6 playoff games this year.  Jonathan Quick #1 netminder for the Kings is a big part of their wins.  Quick is like a wall that doesn't budge.  Saturday Quick stopped 28 of 29 shots without even flinching.  St. Louis scored first in this game with a goal by David Backes.  King Slava Voynov scored to tie the game and end the 1st period 1-1.  In the 2nd period LA scored another short handed goal but not by Dustin Brown, the goal was by Matt Greene.  Brown can only take credit for an assist on that goal.  Then on an empty net off the boards Dustin Penner scores the 3rd goal of the night for the Kings.  St. Louis goalie Brain Elliott stopped 26 of 28 shots.  LA took 3 penalties, St. Louis took 5.  Los Angeles leads the series 1-0.  Below you can check out Dustin Penner's empty net goal.  It was wild.  Off the boards!  I think Penner was more shocked then anyone it went in!

For anyone wondering? This is Quick's secret: NEVER TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE PUCK. Stay square in the play and be ready with your stick and keep you glove up!
