Yesterday was a slow day in hockey with only 3 games played.  With that being said games can actually be more exciting this time of year because teams are trying to the make playoffs.  A win here, a loss there start to add up.  Take for example the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets.  Both teams have 65 points.  Both teams have 29 wins and both have 7 loses in overtime.  Toronto is in 8th place and Winnipeg is in 9th.  Toronto has played 2 less games then Winnipeg so Toronto gets the 8th spot.  In the west you have the Detroit Red Wings (84 points) and the Vancouver Canucks (82 points) leading their divisions and each have  a playoff spot.  San Jose is in 3rd also leading their division with 69 points.  The next teams are St. Louis with 79 points, Nashville with 76 points, Chicago with 73 points and Phoenix with 69 points.  The 8th place in the west right now is Los Angeles with 66 points.  San Jose is is not as strong this year as they have been in the past and could very well make it into the playoffs solely based on the fact they're the best team in a weak division this year.

The Ottawa Senators are on a 4 game win streak and big thanks to this kid Erik Karlsson.  Karlsson scored the opening goal against the Washington Capitals last night and then assisted the next 2!  Heading into the 3rd period Ottawa had a 4-0 lead.  Washington came back and scored 2 goals but with just over a minute left in the period Ottawa's Nick Foligno scored making it a 5-2 final.  Did I mention Karlsson is 21, 6'0 tall and is from Landsbro, Sweden.  The opening goal was Karlsson's 13th of the year but he has 47 assists!  For 60 points total! Eric's assist total sets a new franchise record for Senator defencemen. 4 more points and he'll set another franchise record, points in a season by a defenceman. Go Eric Go!

The Boston Bruins beat the St. Louid Blues 4-2.  It was 3-2 Boston at the end of the 1st peiod and no scoring in the 2nd.  Brad Marchant scored the only goal in the 3rd for the 4-2 final.  Boston can thank their goalie Tim Thomas.  Thomas stopped 30 of 32 shots.  Boston only took 19 shots total the whole game.  Boston is 2nd in the east in 1st in their North East Division but with Ottawa's win last night they are not far behind with 72 points and 7th overall in the same division.

The Colorado Avalanche beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1.  The Kings avoided being shut out thanks to team Captain #23 Dustin Brown.  Paul Sastny scored twice for Colorado.  Brown's goal came early in the 3rd period when Colorado had the 4 goal lead.  Los Angeles is 8th in the west with 66 points but the Calgary Flames (65 points) and Dallas Stars (64 points) are nipping at their heels.  It was Brown's 15th goal of the year.  Drew Doughty and Mike Richards assisted the goal and I ask Terry Murray about both of those players in Episode 8 of Hockey Talk with Courtney!

Tonight is a busier night in the NHL with 9 games being played:
San Jose Sharks vs Toronto Maple Leafs at 4:00pm
Anaheim Ducks vs the Carolina Hurricane at 4:00pm
Minnesota Wild vs the Florida Panthers at 4:30pm
Vancouver Canucks vs the Detroit Red Wings at 4:30pm
St. Louis Blues vs the Nashville Predators at 5:00pm
Tampa Bay Lightning vs Winnipeg Jets at 5:30pm
Dallas Stars vs Chicago Blackhawks at 5:30pm
Phoenix Coyotes vs Calgary Flames at 6:00pm
and finally the Philadelphia Flyers vs the Edmonton Oilers at 6:30pm
The Vancouver vs Detroit game will be an interesting one.  If Vancouver wins in regulation then the teams are tied with 84 points and Vancouver less a game.  If Vancouver wins in OT then they are behind by a point.  If Detroit wins in regulation then they have a 4 point lead overall.  Only time will tell.  GO CANUCKS GO!
