Twelve games were played yesterday in the NHL!  It again was hockey day in Canada with every Canadian team playing each other except Winnipeg played Pittsburgh.  Here is a quick recap of the twelve games.

The Boston Bruins beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout.  The only goal in the 1st came from Boston's Patrice Bergeron.    The only goal in 2nd came from one of my personal favorites and one of "Hockey Talk with Courtney" hearts of the week Shea Weber.  Daniel Paille got the lead back for Boston early in the 3rd.  But then Patric Hornqvist and Mike Fisher scored for Nashville and the Predators were in the lead.  Until Vancouver native Boston Bruin Milan Lucic scored with just over a minute left in the 3rd. No scoring in OT and it only took 5 shooters total to end the S/O.  Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron scored for Boston.  After this game both teams are tied with 70 points.

The Florida Panthers beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1.  Devil Steve Bernier scored 1st and it was his 1st goal in over a year but it was Florida after that.  It was a goal a period for the Panthers.  Sean Bergenheim scored in the 1st, Kris Versteeg in the 2nd and Mikael Samuelsson in the 3rd.  New Jersey is 10th overall in standings with 66 points and Florida is 13th with 63 points.

The New York Islanders beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in overtime.  Former Canuck Rookie Michael Grabner scored for the Islanders early in the 1st and Andrei Loktionov scored in the 2nd for the Kings.  Islander Mark Streit ended it in OT.  Kings goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 23 shots and Islander goalie Evgeni Nabokov stopped 34!  The Islanders are 25th in standings with 54 points while the Kings are 14th with 63.

The New York Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2.  Ryan Callahan scored 3 of the 5 Ranger's goals for his 2nd career hat trick.  Marian Gaborik and Artem Anisimov scored the other 2.  Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux got Philly on the board. New York Rangers still sit 2nd in the league with 75 points while Philly is 7th with 69 points.

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Ottawa Senators in OT.  Ottawa Captain Daniel Alfredsson scored first for his team.  It was back and forth 'til Shawn Horcoff scored 42 seconds into the 3rd and Edmonton had the lead.  Erik Karlsson tied it up for Ottawa with 9:30 gone in the 3rd.  Into OT and it didn't take long (17 seconds exactly) for Taylor Hall to find the back of the net and Edmonton takes the win.  Edmonton is still 29th in the league with 49 points and Ottawa is 12 with 64 points.

In the highest scoring game of the day the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Winnipeg Jets 8-5.  Winnipeg had a 2 goal lead early in the 1st with goals by Kyle Wellwood and Alexander Burmistrov.  Then Pittsburgh came back to tie it up with goals by Dustin Jeffery and James Neal.  Neal's goal was assisted by Evgeni Malkin.  First period ended 2-2.  Chris Kuntiz and Kris Letang scored early in the 2nd for Pittsburgh with both goals assisted by Evgeni Malkin.  Tim Stapleton scored for Winnipeg but then Evgeni Malkin scored a goal ending the 2nd 5-3 PENS.  Into the 3rd period and Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little scored for Winnipeg, Richard Park, Jordan Staal, and Kris Letang scored for Pittsburgh.  Evgeni Malkin assisted Letang's goal again for a 5 point night in his 400th NHL career game.  It was the 6th time Malkin has had a 5 point night and Winnipeg goalie Ondrei Pavelec is the first goalie all season to let in 8 goals.  Pavelec was the harder working goalie as he still stopped 31 shots and Marc-Andre Fleury only stopped 20.  Pittsburgh is still 8th with 67 points while Winnipeg is 22nd with 58 points.  Jordan Staal was back after missing 15 games with a knee injury.  Sidney Crosby is skating with his team but hasn't been cleared to play.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Buffalo Sabers 2-1.  No scoring in the 1st period and Steve Downie and Steven Stamkos scored for Tampa in the 2nd.  Jason Pominville scored in the 3rd for the Sabers but it wasn't enough.  Tampa is 24th in standings with 54 points while Buffalo is 26th with 54 points. League goal leader Steven Stamkos scored his 37th goal.

The Montreal Canadiens shut out the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-0.  This coming after a beautiful ceremony for Mats Sundin who spent 13 years with the Leafs and 11 of those as Captain.  #13  Sundin had his number retired to the rafters.  Five different  Canadiens scored Erik Cole, Rene Bourque, Max Pacioretty, Lars Eller, and Mathieu Darche.  It is the Canadiens 4th straight win and Carey Price's 16th career shutout.  Toronto is 15th with 62 points and Montreal is 23rd with 55 points.

The St. Louis Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in OT.  St. Louis had the chance to extend a 17 home game point  streak to 18 and they did.  Former Canuck and current Avalanche Shane O'Brien scored for Colorado.  David Perron scored both goals for St. Louis in the 1st and before it was over Erik Johnson scored to tie the game 2-2 all by the end of the 1st period.  No scoring in the 2nd and 3rd meant OT that was ended with a goal by St. Louis's Carlo Colaiacovo.  St. Louis is 4th in standings with 73 points and Colorado is 19th with 60 points.

The Columbus Blue Jackets got their 16th win this season beating the Minnesota Wild 3-1.  Minnesota scored 1st by Devin Setoguchi, Rj Umberger scored for the Blue Jackets in the 1st and 2nd while James Wisniewki scored for Columbus in the 3rd.
Columbus still sits 30th and dead last in the league with 38 points and Minnesota is 21st with 58.

The Phoenix Coyotes met the Chicago Blackhawks last night.  Phoenix ended it 3-0.  Radim Vrbata, Boyd Gordon, and Kyle Chipchura scored for Phoenix extending their win streak to 5 games while Chicago is on a 8 game losing streak.  Phoenix goalie Mike Smith stopped all 38 shots and it was his 3rd shutout this season.  Chicago is still beating Phoenix in standings, Chicago is 11th with 65 points while Phoenix is 16th with 62 points.

The final game of the night was between the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames.  It was the 4th game of a 4 game road tip for the Canucks.  Mike Cammalleri scored for Calgary late in the 1st.  Roman Horak scored early in the 2nd for Calgary but late in the 2nd Canuck Rookie and super cutie Cody Hodgson scored for 2-1 score end of the 2nd.  David Booth scored in the 3rd for 2-2 tie.  Into OT and nothing.  Onto the shootout.  Olli Jokinen scored for Calgary, Alex Burrows scored for Vancouver and Jarome Iginla scored for Calgary.  Calgary wins 3-2.  Calgary is 18th in standings with 60 points while Vancouver is 3rd with 74.  Vancouver did pick up 7 of a possible 8 points on the trip and how can you be upset with super star and one of the classiest players in the league Jarome Iginla (Iggy) winning it for his team!
