Trade Deadline is over.  Teams are now working on what they got and what they gave away.  As usual it was a slow start to the trades with the shockers coming at the end.  Here is quick breakdown of what happened
Trade No.1: The Montreal Canadians let go of left wing Andrei Kostitsyn to the Nashville Predators for a 2013 2nd round pick and a conditional 2013 5th round conditional pick.
Trade No. 2:The Detroit Red Wings let go of defenceman Mike Commodore to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a conditional 7th round pick in 2013 draft.
Trade No. 3: The Edmonton Oilers traded defenceman Tom Gilbert to the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Nick Schultz.
Trade No. 4: The Toronto Maple Leafs sent defenceman Keith Aulie to the Tampa Bay Lightning for right wing Carter Ashton.
Trade No. 5: The Colorado Avalanche swapped left wing Daniel Winnik, left wing T.J. Galiardi and a 2013 7th round pick to the San Jose Sharks for left wing Jamie McGinn, left wing Mike Connolly and center Michael Sgarbossa.
Trade No. 6: The Columbus Blue Jackets get two 2012 4th round draft picks and defenseman Taylor
Ellington from the Vancouver Canucks for center Sammy Pahlsson.
Trade No. 7: The Ottawa Senators send defenceman Brian Lee to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenceman Matt Gilroy.
Trade No. 8: The Chicago Blackhawks get defenceman Johnny Oduya from the Winnipeg Jets for a 2nd and 3rd round picks in the 2013 draft.
Trade No. 9: The Boston Bruins acquire right wing Brian Rolston and defense Mike Mottau from the New York Islanders for center Yannick Riendeau and defense Marc Cantin.
Trade No. 10: The Buffalo Sabres trade center Paul Gaustad and a 4th round draft pick in 2013 to the Nashville Predators for a 1st round pick in the 2012 draft.
Trade No. 11: The Boston Bruins get defense Greg Zanon from the Minnesota Wild for defense Steve Kampfer.
Trade No. 12: The Chicago Blackhawks trade defenceman John Scott to the New York Rangers for 5th round pick in the 2012 draft.
Trade No. 13: The Vancouver Canucks swap center Cody Hodgson and defenceman Alex Sulzer to the Buffalo Sabres for right wing Zack Kassian and defenceman Marc-Andre Gragnani.
Trade No. 14: The Toronto Maple Leafs trade forward Dale Mitchell to the Anaheim Ducks for defenceman Mark Fraser.  And finally
Trade No. 15: The Anaheim Ducks dealt winger Andrew Gordon to the Vancouver Canucks for defenceman Sebastian Erixon.

Two players picked up off waivers were:
Montreal claimed right wing Brad Staubitz from Minnesota and Winnipeg claimed defenceman Grant Clitsome from Columbus.
Now what does this all mean in the big picture?  It may mean a lot it or it may mean nothing.  Management is always trying to fill the holes on their teams.  For example the Vancouver Canucks will need some more grit for another long playoff run.  Picking up Sammy Pahlsson and Zach Kassian will add some physical depth to the front end.  Cody Hodgson, who was a fan favorite in Vancouver is off to Buffalo and will probably get more playing time in Buffalo then always lining up after Henrik Sedin and Ryan Kesler.  Now that the dust has settled and everyone has had a night to adjust watch and see what happens tonight and the rest of the season.  In the trades some teams are thinking right now (Vancouver and another playoff run) other teams like Columbus probably have more of a 5 year plan for rebuilding a suffering team.

There were only 5 games were played last night after a busy day trading.
The St. Louis Blues beat the Calgary Flames 3-1.  Jason Arnott #44 of the Blues scored the game winning goal for his team and then assisted on the insurance goal.  Calgary's Curtis Glenncross actually opened up the scoring in the game.  After this win the St. Louis Blues bump the Central Division leaders the Detroti Red Wings out of the 1st place spot to 2nd.  St. Louis is 2nd in the west with 85 points and 1st in their division.

The New York Rangers shut the door on the New Jersey Devils 2-0.  It was handsome goalie and man to your left Henrik Lundqvist's 8th shutout of the year!  The Rangers still lead the east with 86 points.  The Rangers are actually starting to get a bit of a stranglehold on the rest of the eastern conference.  Not another team has crossed the 80 point mark.  Boston and Pittsburgh are the closest but they only have 77 points.

The Nashville Predators beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.  Kings Captain Dustin Brown scored the only goal for his team late in the 3rd period to avoid the shutout.  Nashville goalie Pekke Rinne made 30 saves.  Nashville is tightly hanging on to 5th place in the west and LA has dropped to 10th.

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-3.  Five different Oilers scored including Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle.  Winnipeg has dropped to 8th in the east but still is in the playoff spot.  Edmonton is 14th in the west with 56 points.

And finally the Colorado Avalanche beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1.  The lone goal for Anaheim was scored by cutie Bobby Ryan.  It was a 1-1 tie at the end of the 2nd period but Colorado came back in the 3rd scoring 3 goals!  Colorado is currently 9th in the west with 70 points but Dallas in 8th place also has 70 points.  Anaheim is 13th with 64 points but only 6 points out of a playoff spot.

Tonight's line up is a bit bigger with 9 games being played:
Ottawa takes on Boston at 4:00 pm
Florida takes on Toronto at 4:00 pm
New York Islanders take on Washington at 4:00 pm
Nashville takes on Carolina at 4:00 pm
Detroit takes on Columbus at 4:00 pm
Montreal takes on Tampa Bay at 4:30 pm
Los Angeles takes on Minnesota at 4:30 pm

Vancouver fans might need a little time to adjust to Cody Hodgson being traded to the Buffalo Sabres.  This is a picture of Cody accepting his jersey when he was the 1st round draft pick for Vancouver back in 2008.  Cody was chosen 10th overall.  Since being in the Canucks organization Cody has dealt with back problems that took more then a year to heal and recover from.  Cody got his 1st crack at the big league February 1st 2011 and the next day scored his 1st ever NHL goal.  In the Canucks playoff run in 2011 Cody played in 12 of the 25 games.  Cody attended the Annual NHL All Star Weekend as a Rookie in 2012.  Cody leaves the Canucks in this 2011-12 season having scored 16 goals and assisted on 17 other for 33 pointin 63 games.  Cody you will be dearly missed and best of luck in Buffalo.  Say hi to Christian Ehrhoff for us.
