Friday night 6 games were played in the NHL and Saturday 9.  Here is a quick breakdown: The Vancouver Canucks started off the night friday with their 5th game in 7 days and their 4th game of a 6 game road trip.  They beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1.  The Canucks were coming off a big win the previous night beating the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a S/O and ending the longest home winning streak in NHL history at 23.  Vancouver D-Man Aaron Rome #29 scored his 4th goal of the year to end the 1st period 1-0.  Mason Raymond made it 2-0 and New Jersey's David Clarkson got his team on the board in the 2nd.  Vancouver is 1st league wide with 86 points and Jersey is 6th in the east with 74 points.

The New York Islanders beat the New York Rangers 4-3 in a S/O.  In the 4th round shootout Matt Moulson scored the winning goal.  The Rangers are 1st in the east with 84 points and the Islanders are 13th with 60 points.
The Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1.  Montreal is not having a good season sitting 15th in the east and last with 58 points.
The Colorado Avalanche shut out the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0.  Colorado Goalie Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves and grabbed his 3rd shutout of the year. With this loss Columbus is 15th in the west with 43 points and have only won 18 games this year.  After Trading Jeff Carter and possibly Team Captain Rick Nash let's see what happens.
The Buffalo Sabres beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 in a S/O.  Buffalo's Andrej Sekera scored in the 1st period and Boston's Captain Zdeno Chara ruined the shutout bid by scoring to tie it up with 3:36 left in the 3rd period.  In the 4th round shootout Derek Roy scored and Buffalo picked up 2 points.
And finally on Friday night the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1.  With this win it puts Dallas in 8th place with 68 points but they are tied with Los Angeles and Colorado.  Minnesota is 12th with 63 points.  Watch Dallas put on a very very good show today (Sunday) in hopes of beating the Vancouver Canucks and grab 2 more points and clench the 8th place more securely.

On Saturday in the NHL the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 8-1!  This man to your right Evgeni Malkin #71 had reason to celebrate.  Malkin registered his 9th career hat trick and grabbed an assist!  This means Malkin has 77 points total leading the league.  Penguin Jordan Staal also scored twice and grabbed an assist.  Pittsburgh scored their first 3 goals in the 1st period in less then 4 minutes.  It was 5-0 Pittsburgh until the end of the 2nd period when Lightning Teddy Purcell scored.  Pittsburgh came back and scored 3 in the 3rd.  After this runaway game Pittsburgh is 5th in the east with 75 points and Tampa Bay is 12th with 60 points.  If you look at the stats though Malkin may have 77 points but Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos is 2nd in points with 73 points.  Remember points means goals and assists combined.  In the goals scored category Steven Stamkos is winning with 43 goals and Malkin is 2nd with 36 goals.

The St. Louis Blues beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in a S/O.  The Blues were winning 2-0 until Winnipeg Jet Blake Wheeler scored 2 goals to tie it up.  David Perron scored the winning goal.  The Jets sit 8th in the east with 68 points while St. Louis plays in the uber tough Central Division and is 4th with 83 points but only 2 points behind division leaders the Detroit Red Wings.

Phoenix Coyote Captain Shane Doan scored the insurance goal vs the Edmonton Oilers last night.  It was 2-0 Phoenix after the 1st period.  No scoring in the 2nd.  In the 3rd period Oiler Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his 14th of the year.  Nugent-Hopkins has only played 2 of the last 22 games after a shoulder injury.  Doan's netted his goal late in the 3rd period.  Phoenix soaring up the standings is a bit of a surprise.  Phoenix is 10-0-1 in the month of February (10 wins, 0 loses in, 1 S/O loss).  Phoenix has won every game they have played this month except a S/O lose to the Vancouver Canucks but they still got a point.  They are on a 5 game win streak, the longest in the league right now.  The Coyotes are now their division leaders pumping the San Jose Sharks out.  They Coyoets lead the Pacific Divsion with 73 points. The Coyotes last game of the month is at home vs the Vancouver Canukcs.  Let's wait and see what happens.

The Washington Capitals are on a rampage fighting for a playoff spot.  The Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2.  They had a 4-0 lead after the 2nd period but Toronto came back to score 2.  Both teams are neck and neck in the standings.  Washington is 9th with 67 points only 1 point behind 8th place Winnipeg.  Toronto is 10th with 65 points.
The 1st place team in the east the New York Rangers beat the Buffalo Sabers 3-2 in OT.  Ranger Ryan Callahan scored the OT winner.  The Rangers have 84 points and and Buffalo could make the playoffs with a few wins.  Buffalo is 11th in the east with 62 points.  6 points behind 8th place Winnipeg.
The Florida Panthers beat the Carolina Hurricane 3-2 in a S/O.  Carolina had a 2-0 lead at the end of the 2nd period but Florida came back to tie it up 2-2 to send it into a scoreless OT and the shootout was settled in the 3rd round with a goal by Panther Stephen Weiss.  With this win Florida is leading their South East Divison with 68 points and is 3rd in the east.  WIth the single point Carolina gets to move into 14th place one point past Montreal.
The Detroit Red Wings are now on a 2 game home losing streak after a record setting 23 game home win streak.  The Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche 4-3.  Colorado had a 3 goal lead ending the 3rd period.  Jiri Hudler scored for Detorit followed by Steve Downie for Colorado (Downie picked up 3 points total) then Hudler scored again and finally Red Wing Valtteri Flippula made it 4-3. Detroit still sits 2nd in the west and 1st in their uber strong Central Division with 85 points.  Colorado has moved into 10th place with 68 points but is in a 3 way tie with Dallas and Los Angeles for 8th place in the west.

The Ottawa Senators may have lost to the Boston Bruins 5-3 last night but Jason Spezza #19 of the Senators started this game on a wild points streak.  Spezza had scored 7 goals and picked up 9 assists in his last 7 games.  Last night Spezza assisted all 3 goals for Ottawa.  Ottawa's hot shot Erik Karlsson scored 1st but before the period ended Boston made it 2-1 with goals by Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. Carter Campbell (his 1st NHL goal) scored the only goal for 3-1 Boston lead in the second.  Boston's David Krejci scored the 4th goal for Boston in the 3rd.  Then Ottawa's Captain Daniel Alfredsson scored 2 goals less then 2 minutes apart.  It was a 4-3 game.  Ottawa pulled their goalie but Patrice Bergeron scored his 19th goal of the season on an empty net with 19 seconds to go in the 3rd.  Boston won 5-3.  Boston is 2nd in the east with 77 points and Ottawa is not to far behind with 72 points and 7th in the east.

The Nashville Predators squashed the San Jose Sharks last night in a 6-2 win.  Nashville Captain and one of my personal favorites Shea Weber netted two goals.  Nashville is having a great season and has a 36-19-7 record.  They sit 5th in the west overall but 3rd in the uber strong Central Division.  Nashville has 79 points.  San Jose on the other hand is not having it's best season.  The Sharks have a 32-21-7 record and were just pumped out of 1st place in their Pacific Division by the Phoenix Coyotes.  San Jose sits 7th now in the west and only 3 points ahead of the 3 way tie between Dallas, Los Angeles and Colorado.

The Los Angeles Kings shut the door in the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday 4-0.  Kings Captain Dustin Brown scored the 1st 3 goals for Los Angeles to record a Natural Hat Trick (3 goals by one player in a row).  The hats flooded the ice.  Former Canucks and current King Willie Mitchell scored the 4th goal for LA and Dustin Brown assisted it.  Brown picked up 4 points!  Kings's goalie Jonathan Quick recorded his league leading 7th shutout this season and the 21st of his career.  With this win the Kings have 68 points and are in that 3 way tie with Dallas and Colorado for the 8th place.  Chicago is 6th in the west but 4th in their Central Division with 73 points.

The last game to end last night was between the Calgary Flames and the Philadelphia Flyers.  The Flames had a 3 goal lead through the 2nd period when Philly came back and scored 2 to end the second period 3-2.  It was a back and forth 3rd period but Philly tied it up 4-4 to send the game into OT.  No scoring OT and Matt Read ended it in the 5th round shootout for the Flyers victory.  Philly is 4th in the east with 75 points and Calgary would have made that 3 way tie in the west for 8th place a 4 way tie with a win but only picking up that one point means they have 67 points and is 11th in the west.
