Alright, today is a big day in the NHL!  Trade deadline.  What does the trade deadline mean?  It means this is the last day that teams can trade players this season.  Why the end of february?  It gives coaches and players time to find chemistry for their playoff runs and for the players if they have to move families then it isn't happening right at the end of the school year.

That being said lets move onto what happened yesterday in the NHL.

The Vancouver Canucks lost to the Dallas Stars in overtime.  This was oddly enough the 1st meeting between these 2 teams this year.  They meet 3 more times in the next month.  It started after a scoreless 1st period with a goal by Ryan Kesler assisted by Chris Higgins and Dan Hamhuis.  Next up Mason Raymond scored his 2nd goal in 2 games again assisted by Chris HIggins and Aaron Rome.  Dallas Star Michael Ryder made it 2-1 at the end of the 2nd.  It looked like Vancouver was going to pick up another win and then Mike Riberio scored his 14th goal of the year and tied the game with less than a minute left in the 3rd.  Into OT and it ended with the 21st goal by Loui Eriksson.  Dallas wins 3-2 in OT.  With this ending Vancouver is still #1 in the league with 87 points and Dallas has stepped into the 8th place in the west with 70 points, breaking the 3 way tie with Los Angeles and Colorado.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 thanks to the hat trick by #26 Martin St. Louis.  St Louis also assisted the 4th goal by Matt Gilroy.  League leader in goals Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos did not score but picked up 2 asssits.  New Jersey is moving up the scoring chart currently in 6th with 74 points.  Tampa Bay is 11th with 62 points.  Six points behind Winnipeg in 8th place.

The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2.  League leader Evgeni Malkin scored for the PENS and Columbus Captain and Team Canada Vancouver 2010 Rick Nash scored for Columbus.  Pittsburgh is 4th in the east with 77 points and Columbus with only 18 wins total this year is 15th in the west with 43 points.
The Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders 5-2.  Ottawa's Jason Spezze continues his wild points streak with an assist.  Spezza now has 20 points in 9 games.  Ottawa is making a strong run for the playoffs with 74 points and 7th in the east while the Islanders are 13th with 60 points.
The Florida Panthers beat the Montreal Canadians 4-2. Stephen Weiss scored two goals and picked up one assist.  Florida is 3rd in the east and 1st in their division with 70 points.  The Canadians are still last in the east with 58 points.
The San Jose Sharks lost to the Minnesota Wild 4-3.  San Jose had a 2 goal lead then Wild Cal Clutterbuck scored to end the 1st period 2-1.  Minnesota tied it up in the 2nd.  San Jose took the lead in the 3rd but then Minnesota scored 2 goals just over a minute apart in the 3rd period to win.  After this San Jose is only hanging on to 7th place in the west by 1 point having 71.  The Phoenix Coyotes who now lead the Pacific Division are 2 points ahead of San Jose and on a 5 game win streak.  Minnesota is 12th in the standings with 65 points.

The Anaheim Duck beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1.  Chicago's Patrick Kane actually scored first but Anaheim's Andrew Cogliano tied it up.  Anaheim's Sheldon Brookbank assisted by Teemu Selanne and Francois Beauchemin scored for a 2-1 Anaheim lead.  Then early in the 3rd period, handsome man to your left Duck Teemu Selanne assisted by Team Canada Vancouver 2010 Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry netted the insurance goal for the 3-1 win.  After this win Anaheim  is 13th in the west BUT only 6 points out of the 8th place in the west.  Chicago with this loss is 6th in the west but only 3 points above the team in 8th the Dallas Stars with 70 points.
