There were 9 games played yesterday in the NHL.  After a busy day before trading it was interesting to see what was going to play out.
The first game to end last night was a 1-0 shutout for the Ottawa Senators vs the Boston Bruins.  The young quiet Swedish hot shot to your left Erik Karlsson scored the only goal 14:44 in the 1st period and that was that.  Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner made 32 saves for his 1st career shutout.  Karlsson on the other hand has set his own record.  On an 8 game point streak, collecting 66 points this season alone Karlsson leads all NHL defensemen.  Karlsson also broke Norm MacIver's record of 63 points by a defensemen for the Senators set in the 1992-93 season.  After this win Ottawa sits 5th in the east with 76 points.  Only 1 point behind their 1st place division leaders the Boston Bruins who have 77 points.

The Florida Panthers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3.  Toronto is now on a 3 game losing streak and Florida is leading their division with 72 points.  Toronto is 10th with 65 points.
The Carolina Hurricane beat the Nashville Preadators 4-3.  In the highly skilled Central Division Nashville sits 3rd with 81 points but 5th in the west.  Carolina is 13th in the east with 61 points.
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2.  It was a tie game after 1 period with a 1-1 score.  No scoring in the second period.  2:13 into the 3rd period Blue Jacket Derek Mackenzie got one past Detroit goalie Joey Macdonald and Columbus had a 2-1 lead.  Detroit came back and scored 4 goals in 10 minutes and 9 seconds.  Henrik Zetterberg scoring the game winning goal.  Detroit leads their Central Division and is 2nd overall with 87 points. 1 point behind the Vancouver Canucks.

The Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime.  The Islanders had a 2 goal lead at the start of the 3rd period.  Troy Brouwer scored 1 goal for Washington with 3:29 left in the period.  It was looking bleak and Brouwer  scored again tying the game with 26 seconds left!  Into OT and who scored the winning goal?  The Great 8 Washington's Alex Ovechkin.  This was Alex's 26th goal of the season.  With this win the Capitals barely bump the Winnipeg Jets out of 8th place.  The Capitals have 69 points and 8th place.  The Islanders are 14th in the east with 61 points.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Montreal Canadians 2-1.  League wide goalscoring leader Steven Stamkos opened the scoring.  It was Stamkos's 44th goal this year.  Montreal's David Desharnais tied it up to end the 1st period 1-1.  Lightning Adam Hall scored only his second goal of the season 23 seconds in the 2nd period for the win.  Tampa Bay is slowly but surely climbing up the eastern chart with 64 points and 11th place.  Only 5 points behind 8th place Washington.  Montreal on the other hand is 15th and dead last in the east with 58 points.
The Los Angeles Kings shut out the Minnesota Wild 4-0.  Four different Kings scored including Anze Kopitar.  It is a 3 way tie for 8th place in the west again with Dallas, Colorado and Los Angeles all with 70 points.  Minnesota is 12th with 65 points.  Kings backup goalie Jonathan Bernier stopped all 26 shots for his 1st shutout this year.
The San Jose Sharks beat the Philadelphia Flyers 1-0.  Ryane Clowe scored the lone goal 1:22 into the 1st period.  San Jose goalie Antti Niemi made 26 saves for the shutout and San Jose now sits 6th in the west with 73 points.  Philly is 6th in the east with 75 points.

The last game was between the Vancouver Canucks and the Phoenix Coyotes.  Cory Schneider was between the pipes for Vancouver and Phoenix was on a 10-0-1 run for February.  Vancouver's Alex Edler opened the scoring late in the 1st period.  It was Edler's 8th goal of the season.  No scoring in the 2nd and Ray Whitney #13 of the Coyotes scored at the half way mark in the 3rd, tie game 1-1.  Cory Schneider stopped 34 of 35 shots and Coyote goalie Mike Smith stopped 39 of 40!  A scoreless OT and onto the shootout.  Ray Whitney again and Mikkel Boedker scored for Phoenix and that was that.  The Coyotes end the month of February with a 11-0-1 record.  Vancouver's February record is 9-1-4.  The much talked about "New Canucks" Samuel Pahlsson and Zach Kassian made their debuts in Vancovuer jerseys.  Pahlsson had 3 shots on goal and 11:41 worth of playing time.  Kassian had 1 shot on goal and 12:27 minutes of playing time.  Vancouver still sits 1st in the west and top place overall with 88 points and Phoenix leads their division with 75 points and 3rd in the west.
